Our Mission
MARIPOSA roots its advocacy on behalf of immigrant working families in providing low-cost quality immigration legal services and developing the next-generation of legal experts.
What we do
MARIPOSA equips the youth of the Central Coast to become leaders and advocates in immigration work. We are developing the next generation of legal experts to be grassroots community advocates, ensuring the protection and support of our local families. And we are training grassroots organizers on the complex legal systems our neighbors must navigate. We train young individuals to become non-attorney Accredited Representatives, providing an accessible pathway for those who cannot afford law school right away to become legal advocates. By nurturing the talents and passions of our youth, we are creating a region where families are safeguarded, connected, and thriving. Together, we envision a future where our trained youth continue to serve, within our organization and beyond, sustaining the strength and unity of our community and achieving humane comprehensive immigration reform.
Advocacy
If immigration enforcement affects your family, what you've prepared in advance will make a real difference. MARIPOSA works with Central Coast families to get ready before there's a crisis: gathering documents, making a safety plan for your children, and connecting with local resources. The program is free, confidential, and we come to you.
Legal Services
There have never been enough immigration attorneys on the Central Coast to meet the need. MARIPOSA is building a local answer through the DOJ's Recognition and Accreditation Program, which authorizes trained non-attorneys to practice immigration law through recognized nonprofits. Real legal help, provided by people from this community, at a cost working families can manage.
Professionalism
Youth Right to Rise trains young people from the Central Coast to become immigration advocates and legal service providers for the families they grew up alongside. Participants learn through direct work with real cases. Many are bilingual, grew up in mixed-status families, and already understand what's at stake. We give them the training and credentials to act on it.
Our starting point
Immigrant families face systemic barriers that limit their access to justice, stability, and opportunity. Legal services are often too costly, misinformation is widespread, and career pathways into the legal profession remain out of reach for many young leaders from immigrant backgrounds. Without change, families remain vulnerable and communities struggle to thrive.

Our approach
Outreach To Others
We begin by reaching out to immigrant communities, especially youth and families, through partnerships with schools, colleges, and local organizations. By providing education, resources, and entry points into advocacy, we build trust and spark interest in community-driven justice.
Training Representatives
Community members who are interested in serving take part in our training programs to become accredited representatives and grassroots advocates. This creates a clear career pathway for individuals who might not otherwise have access to law school or formal legal training.
Community Empowerment
Trained advocates provide low-cost, client-centered, and trauma-informed legal services, protecting families from exploitation and ensuring they have the tools to navigate complex immigration systems. This not only serves immediate needs but also develops hands-on experience for new advocates.
Providing Services
Through their service, accredited representatives and advocates grow into leaders who reflect the lived experiences of the community. They become mentors for the next generation, ensuring that knowledge and skills are continuously passed down.
Community Strength
As legal services expand and advocacy grows, families are safeguarded, youth are equipped with careers in service, and policies are influenced by community voices. The result is a self-sustaining cycle where the community educates, protects, and uplifts itself while advancing broader justice and equity.
our vision
Our young legal advocates, realizing their own capacity while simultaneously providing legal assistance in client-centered and trauma-informed manner, will lead our community forward towards equity, justice, and joy
The need
Most families on the Central Coast don't have access to a real immigration attorney. The cost is too high, the waitlists are too long, and the notarios who fill the gap often make things worse. Families in the Central Coast struggle to navigate the immigration system, facing language barriers, misinformation about their rights, and well-founded distrust of institutions that haven't historically been on their side.
